If you were skilled or reasonably intelligent at the time in occupied territory you would be used by the Nazis or probably shot for not conforming. The fourth Secretary-General of the United Nations and the ninth President of Austria, Kurt Waldheim, was an officer in the Wehrmacht during World War II.I think there has to be a separation between the generals and orchestrators of Nazi war crimes and the foot soldiers who simply took orders( wiki the Milgram experiment if you disagree). A death sentence for choosing the army who didn't win seems excessive.I'd have more misgivings about his relationship with Haughey than with the Waffen-SS. I agree with you, but there is a but.I dislike Devvy immensely, but one thing worth pointing out is the context.
1939 was less than 20 years after independence. Relations with Britain had been strained badly at that point, (the economic war, the stupidest of all things done by Dev, etc) and one issue was the retention of British ports in Ireland. Spike Island, etc.Dev and co most likely feared that any wartime concessions made to the British would not end after the war. After all, at the end of WW1, Montenegro, an allied nation, was forceably annexed by the pesky Serbs, and the victorious great powers did nothing to protect their own ally.Given the immediate commencement of the Cold War after WW2, it would be likely that Ireland would never have seen the return of numerous naval and potentially military installations. Perhaps they'd have been given to the Yanks, who knows. Now, in retrospect, that doesn't seem like a bad deal, we'd get Marshall plan money, etc.
But that's only something we can know now. Have you ever heard of the Christmas Raid?General Mulcahy, War of Independence and Civil War Veteran (Cumann na Geadhael )reckoned that it had the potential to take of quickly and that was the concensus of the constitutional parties. There was also the belief from the German aerial bombing of Dublin and Co Wexford that if something were to happen that it would be very destructive. There was an IRA bombing campaign in England too.Internment did happen and there were a small number of executions and no they couldn't have shot them all.The numbers may have been small but.
